PFBB's Spring 2005 concert was inspired by the the film "Brassed Off." Starring Pete Postlethwaite and Ewan McGregor, the movie is set in a small town in Britain. The colliery is about to close, which threatens the town's existence and that of its band. The residents put up a fight, set to the wonderful music of the real-life Grimethorpe Colliery Band. The soundtrack is definitely a highlight of the movie. | | In the midst of labour strife, many members deem the band irresponsible escapism and threaten to quit. It becomes clear, however, from a touching performance of "Danny Boy" to the stirring conclusion at Royal Albert Hall, that music is an expression of the human spirit, a bit of beauty and sanity in a harsh world. With defiance, the band can play "Land of Hope and Glory," even when the land offers them neither. |
